Passings Mary Charlotte Ball, 81, December 5, 2010, assistant professor of music emerita. A Knoxville native, she served as organist in several churches beginning at age 16 when she was invited to play at Knoxville's McCalla Avenue (now Chilhowee Hills) Baptist Church. She went on to serve in the city's Inskip Baptist Church, and then Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. In 1961 she moved to Jefferson City when she became organist at First Baptist Church, serving for 35 years. During her C-N tenure that began in 1964, she served as assistant professor and music librarian for the department's music collection. She and her husband, Louis, were honored in the late 80s with the establishment of The Louis & Mary Charlotte Ball Institute of Church Music, which serves as one of C-N's Steeples of Excellence. She retired from C-N in 1994. With Louis, she composed five volumes of organ and piano selections for church use. She authored numerous articles for church music periodicals. She is survived by her husband, two sons and several extended family members. Donna Sue Clayton, 50, d. September 5, 2011, administrative assistant to the vice president of Advancement. An active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, she joined C-N's Advancement office in 2005. She is survived by her husband Scott and two children, Christopher and Katelyn, as well as several extended family members. Dr. Forrest Conklin, 83, d. April 3, 2011, former assistant professor and intercollegiate debate coach. An ordained minister and veteran of the U.S. Navy Air Corps, he was an instructor for Clarke Memorial College before joining Carson- Newman in 1954. While at C-N he led his debate team of Barnett Pearce and John Wittig to capture the title at the 1965 National Debate Tournament, C-N's first national championship, defeating the likes of the University of Miami and Northeastern State University. Conklin went on to teach at the University of Northern Iowa until he retired in 1997. A resident of Farragut, he was active in genealogy research and a volunteer with the East Tennessee Historical Society. Survivors include his wife Phyllis, a son, and several extended family members. Bob Davis, 81, d. October 2, 2011, former head football coach. A native of Bluefield, West Virginia, he was recruited to play football at the University of Tennessee by General Robert Neyland, where he was center for the 1951 national championship team. Davis served in the US Army and later became football and basketball coach at Sevier County High School. He joined the Carson-Newman football coaching staff in 1964, serving as head coach for two seasons. He was then hired as assistant football coach at UT, before serving as associate athletic director. He was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. He is preceded in death by wife Jane Davis. He is survived by two sons, a daughter and several extended family members. John Boyd Gibson, 80, d. August 30, 2011, former professor of education. A North Carolina native, he became a resident of Jefferson City and taught in Carson- Newman's education department until his retirement in 1963. He was an Army veteran, former city councilman, and a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City. He is survived by his wife Eva Nell Gibson, five sons, and extended family. Alexandria "Alex" Denise Johnson, 19, d. December 4, 2010, C-N freshman. She was a pre-med student and member of Rutledge Baptist Church. She is survived by her parents Dennis and Doodle Johnson along with her brother Jackson, sister Jasmine, and several extended family members.
