Alumna gives $200,000 to Carson-Newman Mary Brandes '71 loves Carson-Newman and believes in its mission. It's a mission she knows well, as 13 members of her family attended the University. Her involvement in C-N's Women of Vision coupled with a strong belief in her alma mater and its future led the recently retired educator and her husband Russ to give $200,000 to the institution. Stirred by her desire for supporting Christian higher education, Vice President for Advancement Dr. Danny Nicholson encouraged Brandes to share her feelings about C-N before donors at The Celebration Dinner in October. The Brandeses, who reside in St. Petersburg, Florida, requested that their gift be designated "unrestricted," allowing C-N to use the money in areas that would see the greatest benefit. The results are in… Newsweek/ The Daily Beast ranked Carson- Newman as America's leading higher education institution in community service, and second overall among "Most Service-Oriented" schools. The Princeton Review named C-N as a "2012 Best College in the Southeast." The Princeton Review Southeast region encompasses Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. U.S. News & World Report included C-N in its 2012 Best Colleges Guide. Carson-Newman was named 13th in the Regional Colleges, South category, as well as championed as a "Best Value" by the publication. Forbes included Carson-Newman in its "America's Top Colleges" listings, a compilation that features the top 20 percent of the country's undergraduate institutions. One of only 14 Tennessee colleges or universities to be included, C-N was ranked sixth in the state. CN.EDU gets makeover In August the University unveiled the latest version of its website. The new site was born from a creative partnership with Knoxville's Trademark Advertising. The site is photography driven throughout, but most prominently on its landing page where a daily rotating image gives visitors a glimpse inside Carson-Newman. Designed with the end user in mind, the site improves on intuitive navigation. Content for CN.EDU is generated by more than 100 editors on campus composed of administrators, deans, department heads, and administrative assistants. Mossy Creek Press offers possibilities for C-N and authors Mossy Creek Press has been established to serve the publishing needs of Carson-Newman College's faculty and alumni. An innovative arrangement between C-N and Parson's Porch, Inc, MCP allows faculty, staff and alumni authors the benefits of on demand publishing, a national distributor and online ordering. Dr. Gerald Borchert, visiting senior professor of religion, serves as the press's editor. Born from conversations between Dr. David Tullock '82, executive director of Parson's Porch, and C-N President Randall O'Brien, the enterprise offers C-N a non-traditional revenue stream while granting Tullock a way to help his alma mater. MCP directs a percentage of sales of each book to C-N. New books include: Assaulted by Grief: Finding God in the Broken Places – Written by C-N's School of Religion faculty members, the tome includes stories of several who have had to bury children, as well as pastoral responses for those who find themselves ministering to families suffering from such loss. The Lands of the Bible – Authored by Borchert, who has lived in Israel and traveled to the region more than 40 times, the book is designed to assist both seasoned travelers and first- time visitors. History Under Control: Studies in the Book of Revelation and An Honest Look at Life: Studies in the Book of Ecclesiastes- In the first, Dr. Harold Bryson, senior visiting professor of religion, asserts that the heart of John's Revelation is a study on Christ's glory. The second work was prepared for Bible study teachers and students of Ecclesiastes. Set Free by Forgiveness: The Way to Peace and Healing – O'Brien combines biblical exposition, psychological research and compelling stories to help the reader transcend obstacles toward freedom from anger and hurt. Care and Maintenance for the Christian Life – Longtime C-N professor of religion and counseling, Dr. Bill Blevins examines foundational spiritual growth, including suggestions for developing a mature faith.
