May / June 2015 21 I t is one of those beautiful Spring days in and around Kansas City. A few weeks earlier you were probably inspired by the great weather to get down and dirty with your Porsche and give it its' Spring cleaning. Now would be the perfect day to head out on the road, show off your gleaming pride and joy and absorb the beauty of the day with a great drive. But where do you go? Why not the Kansas City Automotive Museum in Olathe? Al- though this museum is only in its infancy, and not even in its perma- nent home, the future possibilities look bright. Kansas City has had a long relationship with the automobile. Hen- ry Ford opened his second car production facility here in 1907, and Chevrolet followed just a few years later. Many famous race car drivers, such as A.J. Foyt and Maston Gregory honed their skills here in KC or captured their first wins on tracks now long bulldozed under. This and more is beautifully chronicled in the museum. The Kan- sas City Automotive Museum is not just a collection of fine cars from our past, but an informative walk through the automotive his- tory as it effected Kansas City and those people and businesses that were part of that movement. One of the unique aspects of the museum is that the much of the inventory of cars on display will change on a frequent basis. Area collectors and car clubs will be invited to bring their cars in to the museum, Porsche having been spotlighted earlier this year. A visit to the museum will always be a surprise as to what rolling gems will be on display at that particular time. Expect to see sport cars, horse drawn buggys, muscle cars, classic cars and dirt track racers. With the variety of cars, photographs, advertisements and informative panels, both the young and old can leave the museum with new knowledge. Fire up your Porsche, grab your significant other or grandchild and head over to the museum. You will have a fun drive and learn some- thing about cars in KC that you never knew before.
