May / June 2015 6 EDITOR'S COLUMN By Stan Thorne Do We Ever Grow Up? BOYS AND THEIR TOYS You've heard it said before, the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. True? I don't know. I was walking through Toys 'R Us with my lovely wife looking for a kid's birthday gift. I passed by row after row of board games, bouncy balls, and Monster High dolls. Don't ask. I came to the Lego aisle. I froze, as memories rushed back to me. I had so many Legos when I was young. I still remember building robots, castles and cars. Lots of cars. But wait, what's this? Has Lego gone high tech? Proudly displayed on the end cap was Porsche's 918. I could not help myself. Later that evening I tore open the box and the little plastic pieces went everywhere. Christmas! Moments later McKenna, my 10 year old came around the corner. "Daddy, wha'cha doing? Oooh Legos! Can I play" I wanted to say "no this is my toy", but I did not think that would be setting a good example. So I shared like any good kid with a new toy should do. I pouted later. She read the instructions, I found the pieces, and she put together the 918, my new toy. I did get to put the stickers on. So there's that. This process did get me wondering. Is Lego aiming to sell a few toys to adults, or is Porsche planting the car enthusiast-seed in the next generation? I suspect a little of both. In today's world of marketing where residual toy sales from a Disney movie make way more than the movie does, it would not surprise me if Porsche had a hand in it. And if Porsche does, so does Ferrari and McLaren. And if you are a true car guy you have to know which is faster. XCARS.com had to know too. Play the video to find out which is faster. - STAN Oh and if you live under a rock and do not know what the 918 Porsche is, or just want to see blue flames shoot from it's exhaust - click on this link... https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=nSqzp3kdAm4
