May / June 2015 11 Continued 12 QUESTIONS necessarily light and nimble. 7. What have you done to personalize it? The 928, not much because I just bought it in the fall, and then spent time scraping 27 years of grime off the front end and bottom of the engine. The 944 Turbo, well that was my oldest son's first car. He put a big, dumb, ugly subwoofer in the back. I've got to get rid of that thing. The 996, I did a bunch of very minor mods: Schild frunk liner, LED interior lighting, aluminum gearshift and e-brake, etc. Nothing significant performance-wise. 8. Favorite memory with car - or funny story? Yikes, there are a lot. Probably the silliest was back in college when I had a Fiat X1/9. A really neat "baby Ferrari" except it had no power. Top end was about 90 mph, going downhill with a tailwind. When I drove from home up to Mizzou, about a 2 hour drive, I used to pretend I was starting out in last place (33rd) at the Indy 500, and every car I passed on the trip moved me one place higher in the pack. If I passed 32 other cars before I got to the Columbia city limits, I became the Indy 500 champion. In the early '80's, winning the real Indy 500 might have been an easier feat than passing 32 cars in that Fiat. 9. Cars growing up that you had fun with? My older brother's 1972 Ford Gran Torino (it was bright red with an orange stripe, and we all know red cars are the fastest). My first car, a turquoise 1969 Ford LTD, landed in more ditches than I can remember. I had a bright green 1972 Buick Skylark convertible my last year in college that we could load about 20 guys into to head over to the football stadium at Mizzou on a Saturday afternoon. I haven't fully grown up yet, so the list is bound to grow. 10. What was your nickname in high school? "Wags", but the more colorful one was my callsign in the Navy: "Cheese". There is no one with a callsign like "Maverick" or "Ice Man" in the real Navy Aviation. You get a callsign for doing something stupid or embarrassing or both. Mine was both, but the story remains highly classified. When I started dating my wife, who is from Spain, the guys changed my callsign to "Queso". 11. What would you like your next Porsche to be? Ron Stopfer's car. A Speed Yellow 996 Turbo. Not one like Ron's – I want Ron's actual car. You hear that, Ron? You can find another car. Heck, I'll even trade you my 928, even up. It's the coolest car on the face of the earth, you know? 12. If you won the lottery what would be the top 3 cars you would own? Hmm, well, I'd like to hunt down my dad's old 1938 Ford dirt track racer. It's somewhere in central Missouri, I'm sure. But, I'd have to spend a fortune finding it and restoring it. But, he died when I was a kid, so it'd be worth every penny to have that car. Then, Ron would probably make me way overpay for his car, so I'll need another small fortune to buy his 996 Turbo. Third, it would be cool to find that old X1/9 from my youth. I wouldn't mind winning a few more Indy 500 championships before my time on the planet is done. - JEFF
