A
s a young boy growing up in
Sunnyvale, CA, some of the
most vivid memories I have are of
those days when the family loaded
up the car and migrated with tons
of other families like lemmings "over
the hill" to the beach. We would head to the Santa Cruz
beaches by the Boardwalk and I would spend the day on a
skim board, body surfing and digging for sand crabs.
Now in my late 50s, I still really enjoy spending time at the
beach. It can be therapeutic, calming and invigorating all at
once. There are so many choices and various recreational
opportunities based on the extreme diversity of Monterey
County. The dramatic beauty of our scenic coastline is simply
incredible. I hope you enjoy our beaches feature (pg. 110),
which serves as a reference to some of the many oceanside
areas that we have to indulge in here.
Monterey Bay Area resident, surfer, beach lover, actress and
iconic supermodel Marisa Miller has graced the covers of many
magazines and enjoys a multi-faceted career (pg. 102). Learn
about her latest professional and personal endeavors and as of
this writing, she is about to deliver her second child.
Also on the subject of our amazing coastline is photogra-
pher Tom O'Neal's latest works. These photographs are a
series of images taken at local shorelines. They were shot in an
artistic way that incorporates movement and evokes different
moods (pg. 130).
This time of year is a great one and I hope you take the time
to experience the natural beauty and diversity that our region
has become known for. There is something for everyone here
and few places on the planet rival it.
