FORECAST 2015 / STORM & SECURITY PROTECTION 9 CONTACTS CONTACTS FLASH Names Mayfield 2015 Weatherperson of Year The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) in February named former National Hurricane Center (NHC) Director Max Mayfield as 2015 National Weatherperson of the Year. Mayfield was selected for his exemplary forecasting skills and dedication to protecting the public during his 43-year career that includes service in the U.S. Air Force, National Weather Service, NOAA/National Hurricane Center and his current position as Hurricane Specialist for television station WPLG Local 10, Miami, FL. Mayfield's leadership as NHC director during Hurricane Katrina and the infamous 2004-05 hurricane seasons earned him widespread public acclaim and presidential recognition. "Max Mayfield is beloved by the public and respected by professionals because he sets a standard of excellence," said FLASH President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson. "He has demonstrated unconditional dedication to using the science of meteorology to save lives and protect property threatened by the deadliest hurricanes. And he does so with grace and kindness. We are especially grateful to [Mayfield] for bringing his respected voice to the disaster safety and resilience movement." AAMA Recognizes Member Leadership at Annual Conference The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recognized the contributions and achievements of its members at its 78th Annual Conference Awards Banquet in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, in February. Kim Flanary, engineering director, Milgard, Tacoma, WA, was named Outstanding Member, given to an individual who has distinguished himself through work and dedication to the advancement of AAMA and the industry as a whole. Flanary, a current chairman of the AAMA board of directors, maintains 49 active committee and task group memberships, bringing the total to 83 over the course of his many years of service. The Distinguished Service Award for the Architectural Products Group was presented to Doug Holmberg, quality manager, Apogee Enterprises/Wausau Window and Wall Systems. This award is given to an individual who accomplishes formative work on behalf of the association and the Architectural Products Group. Holmberg currently is involved in the work of 37 AAMA committees and task groups spanning subject matter ranging from security hazard mitigation to technical matters. The Distinguished Service Award for the Residential Products Group was presented to Joe Hayden, senior engineer, Pella. This award is given to an individual who accomplishes formative work on behalf of the association and the Residential Products Group. Hayden currently serves on 52 committees and task groups. Kawneer, Norcross, GA, was given the 2015 Chairman's Award, which is given to an AAMA member company. Kawneer was selected for distinguishing itself over the past two years with outstanding commitment and dedicated support to the association and the fenestration industry. WDMA Elects New Leadership The Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) installed new leadership at its Spring Meeting and Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, in March. Al Babiuk, Loewen Windows, has been elected to the association's 2015-17 chair. Babiuk replaces Steve Donner, Weiland Sliding Doors and Windows, an Anderson company. Babiuk is president and CEO of Loewen, based in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. "With a high pace of change continuing in the policy areas of energy conservation, building codes, environmental stewardship, housing and taxation, WDMA will again advocate for an approach that balances these reforms with the competitiveness of its members," said Babiuk. Other new members of the WDMA Executive Committee are: vice chair/treasurer: Phil Donaldson, Andersen Corp., Oak Park Heights, MN; door representative: Robert Lewis, Masonite International, Tampa, FL; window representative: Steve Tourek, Marvin Windows & Doors, St. Paul, MN; and supplier representative: Jeff Shilakis, HOPPE North America, Ft.
