Your oil has a story to tell. Are you listening?
This issue of Machinery Lubrication magazine highlights the value of oil analysis
with a series of articles devoted to this important subject.
Much like how a doctor evaluates your physical health through a series of
blood tests, oil analysis can provide vital information about the condition of your
machinery by assessing the lifeblood of the equipment — the oil. This data can help you
determine the root causes of mechanical problems that threaten your machines.
Whether performed on new oils from the supplier, oils that have been in storage,
used oils in service or oils that have undergone some type of restoration (fi ltration or
dehydration), oil analysis can enable you to improve machine reliability and reduce
lubricant consumption.
Within this issue, you can read about the benefi ts of condition-based oil changes and
see the cost savings that resulted from implementing a proactive used oil analysis main-
tenance strategy. Other articles will discuss how to select machines for oil analysis and
why Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy testing can be a valuable addition
to any oil analysis program. You will also fi nd an oil analysis buyer's guide with a variety
of products ranging from spectrometers and viscometers to fl uid sampling systems and
condition monitoring sensors.
Your oil is talking, but you must be literate in the language of oil analysis to extract
this useful information and learn how to do a better job of lubricating your equipment.
