"For me, it's better to have a few good pieces in nicer fabrics than to have piles of clothing that you only kind of like. I help clients be a little more discerning about what they're purchasing and what to look for," she says. For most women, she suggests simple wardrobe basics: a pair of jeans, casual pants, a few well-cut tops and a suit that can be dressed up or down, plus a little black dress. "But it doesn't have to be black—some people look bet- ter in navy or red," says Engelman. Some clients also need gowns and eveningwear for special events; others will focus on smart combinations appropriate for meetings, school gatherings and lunch with friends. A flattering fit and balanced proportions always make garments look better, Engelman adds. "Clothes really need to grace the body. When things are too tight, it makes a person look larger. When they are too big, it makes a person look odd. We don't think about those kinds of things very often," she says. "I have clients who love to buy clothes, and they have won- derful taste…I'm just here to make sure they look all the more perfect in those clothes." After analyzing a client's lifestyle and taste, Engelman suggests outfits and apparel that maximize a wardrobe. "It takes sitting with the person and looking in their closet to see what they have and what they love," she says.
