If there's a rock chip or something, we don't ding that— our motto is that cars are made to be driven," says Zucchi. "But they have to be correct. They can't have a modern stereo in the backseat, and they can't have incorrect screws, torn rubber, torn upholstery... It has to be the way it came out of the factory, but driven and well-maintained." Select Coppa Bella Macchina honorees then move on to the Coppa GT competition. Only 25 cars are eligible for this stage at most meets, but the field has been expanded to 40 because of a high number of registrants for the Monterey Ferrari event. Coppa GT is the highest award an individual can receive at an FCA meet, and it typ- ically goes to three entrants or fewer. At this level, cars meet a strict assortment of qualifications and must also excel during a track trial at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "It's the most prestigious award. You've got to be able to drive the car very well at speed, and the car has to perform very well," Zucchi explains. "It gets pretty intense." Car aficionados from as far as Australia and Hong Kong have already registered for this year's gathering, and a significant number of FCA Pacific Region members will also be on hand. Zucchi expects a larger-than-normal crowd because of this year's location. "You have the California setting, and the Carmel area that's known for upscale, high-qual- ity events like the Pebble Beach Concours and the Monterey races," he says. "It's the cream of the crop and you're going to see the best of the best, so people want to be out here."
