Marchesa Jewelr y Shines Bright for 30 Year s S oon after Marchesa Jewelry opened its doors in 1985, Connie Teal was working behind the counter of the Pebble Beach store on an especially busy day. A customer who frequently visited the shop stepped in to help—and that impromptu salesperson was Nancy Morse Borland, daughter of Pebble Beach Company founder Samuel Finley Brown Morse. "I remember thinking, 'Wow…where else could this happen?'" says Teal, who grew up working in her parents' jewelry stores in Oregon. She helped her mother, Louise Ward Trout, establish Marchesa Jewelry 30 years ago, and the two still operate the business together. Melissa Davis Rozsa, Teal's sister, recently moved to Pebble Beach, as well. She joins the store after working with Tiffany & Co. and Montblanc in New York City. The multi-generational team sells fine jewelry and gift items, guided by more than five decades of family tradition. Long-time clients include local residents, second homeowners who frequently return to the area, and many visitors stopping off in Pebble Beach. "The old stores had the bridal registry, fine china, gift wrap…it was real- ly about knowing a customer," Teal says. "While we're in a different situa- tion now and this is more of a travel destination, we still try to maintain that hometown jewelry store feel." To celebrate three decades in business, Marchesa Jewelry will hold a storewide sale and offer special pieces for purchase throughout the sum- mer. The festivities culminate with several August events coinciding with this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. While Concours weekend has always been busy, it now draws a much bigger crowd than in the store's early days. "When my mother and I started, the car show was just a nice little extra event on a Sunday," says Teal. "We would run the store by ourselves and women would come in dressed up a little nicer and with hats. Now, I'll have at least six employees on the floor."
