Inhalation AUGUST 2015 25 What? Inhaled Therapies for Tuberculosis and Other Infectious Diseases When? October 14-15, 2015 Where? StarHotels DuParc, Parma, Italy For information: www.tefarco.it/TB2015/pages/Default.aspx Previewing Inhaled Therapies for Tuberculosis and Other Infectious Diseases The third international TB confer- ence "Inhaled Therapies for Tubercu- losis and Other Infectious Diseases" will be held October 14-16, 2015 in Parma, Italy. Rationale of the conference The rationale of the conference is described on its website, in the follow- ing manner "Aerosol therapy for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) and other pulmonary infections is grow- ing due to the accessibility of local tar- geting, the complexities of treatment by conventional routes and the impressive advancement of inhalation technology. The understanding of the molecular and cellular mecha- nisms, local immunology and patho- physiology of tuberculosis dictate the strategies for delivering selected drugs and vaccines to the site of infection for successful outcomes in this important therapeutic endeavor. Difficulties may be experienced with respect to delivery of two or three potent but poorly bioavailable drugs, barriers to the treatment due to co-infection, impact of pathophysiology factors on the fate of inhaled medicines or mul- tidrug resistance. Due to the long duration of therapy and drug combi- nation required, treating TB by inhalation could teach how to trans- late therapy outcomes to other infec- tions prevalent in cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis or COPD. This meet- ing focuses on tuberculosis and intends, from TB therapy, to translate products, technologies and proce- dures for efficiently treating the pul- monary infective diseases." Conference presenters and topics The conference will feature more than 25 invited speakers, five moderators and four rappoteurs. Their presenta- tions and discussions will be divided into the following four topics: • Tuberculosis: mechanisms of mucosal immunity and patho-phys- iology • Inhaled Therapies: small molecules, peptides, nucleic acids, vaccines, phages • Inhaled Therapies: non-clinical and clinical evaluation • Formulations and devices for tuber- culosis and other pulmonary infec- tions Additional conference events The conference will also include posters, a welcome reception and a conference dinner. The 4-star StarHotels DuParc will be the site of the conference. Rich in Art Nouveau influences, it is located next to the Parco Ducale.
