2011 YEAR Annual African American History Month Lecture On February 9, Laura TurnerO'Hara of theOffice of the Historian of the U.S. House of Representa- ves spoke on Senator HiramRevels, the first African American to serve in Congress. Rodney Ross of the Naonal Archives and the Illinois State Society opened the event,which concluded with a spokenword performance about African American history that encouraged audience parcipaon. The Illinois State Society and the DC Knox Club joined USCHS in sponsoring the event. MARCH BROWN BAG SERIES MARKSWOMEN'SHISTORYMONTH KriseMiller (le) returned to the USCHS podiuminMarch to kick off a book-signing series featuring books on tweneth-century First Ladies published by the University of Kansas Press. Miller discussed EllenWilson and EdithWilson, the twowomenmarried toWoodrowWilson during his presidenal tenure. Later in themonth,Myra Gun spoke about herwork on Barbara Bush and her literacy campaign. Barbara Perry spoke to a large audience about Jacqueline Kennedy; audiencemembers jumped at the chance to share memories of Kennedy andwhat shemeant to them. Aerwards, many of those guests lined up so Perry (seated on right) could sign their copies of her Kennedy biography. Maurine Beasley (standing) concluded the serieswith herwork on Eleanor Roosevelt, and like Perry, she engagedwith her eager listeners.
