September / October 2015 36 SPECIAL INTEREST By Jim Rand Flat 6 Options In RETIREMENT Retirement. For many that means traveling and visiting those sites that work, chil- dren or money previously had thrown up road blocks. For others when it arrives it leads to developing new skills, whether that might be learning how to play a guitar or paint a landscape with oil on canvass. For Lee's Summit resi- dent Jim Nance, retirement meant purchasing classic sport cars that needed just a little tender loving care, and when the time and buyer was right, selling it to its' new care taker. When Nance was offered an early retirement, he took it. Suddenly Jim was not working 9 to 5, and only in his 50s. However, Jim's love for sport cars, which began to surface when he came of age to legally drive, gave him his new form of income, and kept him out of his wife's way. Shelby Mus- tangs and Sunbeam Tigers, rulers in the 60s and 70s on SCCA road race tracks, were Jim's first collecting efforts. Jim would give each car a fine detailing, and when nec- essary a mechanical fix. Be- fore a buyer would learn of Jim's find, he would enjoy the fruits of his efforts on the open road. That usually did not then or now last long before word of mouth sent a buyer Jim's way. In early 2000, Porsches started to fill Nance's garage more than others. Their combination of unique styl- ing and German engineering caught Jims' eyes, and he has continued to make them Photos by Jim Rand
