Mathematics, 2nd Edition
Macmillan Reference USA | 4 volumes
February 2016
eISBN: 9780028663777
ISBN: 9780028663784
A revision of the 2002 1st edition, the
four-volume, full-color Mathematics
explains mathematical concepts along
with a fascinating historical overview
of the field. It explores the uses and
effects of math in daily life, while short
biographies (in the form of sidebars)
highlight mathematicians who have
made significant contributions to their
fields. Careers in mathematics are also
explored. Written in a tone and at a level
appropriate for students (primarily those
in high school and non-mathematics-
major undergraduates), each volume of
the encyclopedia contains approximately
75 entries (300 entries in total). As with
the previous edition, the basic disciplines
of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
are key themes, with the goal of
making these topics more accessible and
interesting to students and the general
reader. Mathematics is illustrated through-
out with images, equations, tables, and
figures, and includes sidebars. It includes
individual volume indexes, as well as a
cumulative index at the end of Volume 4.
Key terms are identified in the margins
of an entry and are also gathered in a
glossary. A thematic outline provides a
guide to entries by subject.
