THE CAPITOL DOME
Your Capitol, Our Mission: 50 Years Inspiring
Informed Citizenship
In celebration of its fiftieth anniversary in 2012, the Board of Trustees of the United States Capitol Historical Society has announced the theme of its year-long commemoration: "Your Capitol, Our Mission: 50 Years Inspiring Informed Citizenship." The theme refers to the organization's commitment, as stated in its articles of incorporation, "to foster and increase an informed patriotism of the land in the study of this living memorial to the founders of this nation and the continuing thread of principles as exemplified by their successors." All of the Society's programs in 2012 will relate
to the anniversary theme. In addition to its regular programs—Freedom Award, lectures, symposium,
youth forum, tours, etc.—several new programs are planned. One program has already been launched—a student essay contest which is described on page 19. Upcoming programs include an
exciting interactive traveling exhibit that is in the planning stages. A web version of the exhibit is also planned. The National Heritage Lecture for 2012 will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary by examining the history of Congress and the Capitol in the last fifty years. Further details on these and other anniversary year programs will be announced as they become available. Keep an
