looking back USA HOCKEY TIMELINE USA Hockey Heads Into New Millennium By HARRY THOMPSON 2000 The addition of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild bring the total number of NHL teams to 30. 2000 March 25, 2000 The Middlebury (Vt.) Panthers defeat the Augsburg (Minn.) Auggies, 8-1, to capture the inaugural American Women's Collegiate Hockey Alliance National Championship Div. III title. March 25, 2001 The Minnesota- Duluth Bulldogs win the inaugural NCAA Women's Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 victory over the St. Lawrence Skating Saints. Feb. 24, 2002 It's a North American showdown for the gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games as Canada defeats the United States, 5-2, to win the gold medal. Sept. 10, 2004 The United States fails to defend its crown in the World Cup of Hockey after falling to Finland, 2-1, in the semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Sept. 15, 2004 NHL owners lock out the players, putting the 2004-05 NHL season on hold pending a new collective bargaining agreement. The 2004-05 NHL season is cancelled because of the Feb. 16, 2005 failure to reach a new collective agreement. March 27, 2005 Krissy Wendell leads the University of Minnesota to its second straight NCAA women's hockey championship. Wendell wins the 2005 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and becomes the second woman in school history to tally more than 100 points in a single season. 12 June 7, 2004 The Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Calgary Flames, 2-1, to bring the Stanley Cup to Florida for the first time. Feb. 6, 2004 Jan. 28, 2005 Olympic gold medalist Angela Ruggiero becomes the first female non- goaltender to play in a men's professional hockey game with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League. Disney releases "Miracle," a film about the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team, featuring Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks, who served as a consultant for the film. Feb. 17, 2006 The hockey world is stunned as Sweden scores a huge upset over the United States with a semifinal shootout victory. The U.S. rebounds to defeat Finland, 4-0, on a hat trick by Katie King in her final international game. July 13, 2005 On the 301st day of the lockout, the NHL and NHL Players' Association announce a tentative agreement, allowing the league to resume play in October. The NHL ushers in a new era in excitement as the Buffalo Sabres host the first NHL Winter Classic before a crowd of 71,217 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Natalie Darwitz April 12, 2009 The United States defends its title at the IIHF Women's World Championship with a 4-1 victory over Canada. Julie Chu and Natalie Darwitz tie for the tournament scoring lead with 10 points apiece. Feb. 21, 2002 The U.S. Women's Team comes up short in defending its Olympic gold medal, falling 3-2 to Canada in the final game at the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. June 15, 2003 Ron DeGregorio takes over as the fourth president in USA Hockey history. Walter Bush, who served in that position for 17 years, becomes the chairman of the board. Aug. 11, 2003 The IIHF Women's 2003 World Championship in Beijing is cancelled due to concern over the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemic in Asia. The hockey world loses a legend as Herb Brooks is killed in a single-car accident near Forest Lake, Minn. The head coach of the 1980 and 2002 U.S. Olympic Teams had just left a charity golf outing to support Minnesota Hockey when the accident occurred. Jan. 5, 2004 The United States rallies from a 3-1 second period deficit to beat Canada, 4-3, to claim its first-ever IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Forward Zach Parise is named the tournament's MVP.
