Alumni Council President John C. Mason Jr. '53, MD '55, sounded their praises as they waited to open their envelopes. "You have reached another milestone in your progress through your career in medicine," he said. "Like the White Coat Ceremony just a few years ago, this is an- other moment in your rite of passage. We hope you'll find your way back to this institution to extend a hand to those who wish to follow in your footsteps." Fourth-year students Caroline Novak (see "Launch- ing a Brilliant Future," page 21), Kiana Andrew and Sophia Hermann were the first randomly summoned to get their envelopes, and the whoops and shouts that greeted them continued to echo throughout the morning. As the list of names continued onward and enve- lopes were eagerly opened, tension gave way to excite- ment. Students pumped their fists, jumped up and down and, along with family members, pulled out a battery of cell phones and cameras to capture the moment. M4 class president Bhavna Balaney dabbed away copious tears as she looked forward to her residency at University of Pittsburgh. She's not sure what specialty she wants yet, and "they're strong in a lot of internal medicine specialties," Balaney said. "[Pittsburgh] has a reputation for being one of the most livable cities." Asim Farooq, a native of the Chicago suburbs, will be among the cohort staying put at University of Illinois Medical Center, where he relishes joining "one of the strongest ophthalmology departments in the country." His father, Syed Farooq, beamed as he recalled how Asim talked about going into medicine from a very early age. "He has been a gifted and grade-A student all the way," Syed said. "I'm very proud that he went to UIC." Another M4 staying home is Gurkiran Sardar, who will concentrate in emergency medicine and continue to volunteer with and serve on the board of the Student Run Free Clinic. That group of students, residents and atten- dants runs the show on Tuesday nights at Community Health, a free clinic on Chicago's West Side. "I just wanted to stay in the city," said Sardar, whose diverse background also includes two years work- ing on an HIV research project in Rwanda and Zambia prior to medical school. "I love UIC. I was drawn to the people, the culture, the energy, the commitment to stu- dent life, the commitment to international health."
