Tippett and G. Pemberton Details: See page 20 The History of Petroleum Geology Committee of the AAPG will hold its annual forum in conjunction with ACE in Calgary. The session will begin with a few introductory remarks and will be followed by a slate of presentations describing various aspects of petroleum history in a roughly chronological order. Discovery Thinking Forum: Innovative Success in Canada and Colombia Date: Monday, 20 June Time: 1:45 p.m.–5:15 p.m. Location: Hall B, Room 2 Fee: Included with registration Co-Chairs: C. Sternbach, P. Weimer and J. Hogg Details: See page 23 The "Discovery Thinking" Forum will be the 15th presentation of the AAPG 100th Anniversary Committee's program recognizing "100 Who Made a Difference." This Forum, co-sponsored by AAPG's Division of Professional Affairs (DPA), will feature four invited speakers who will describe major discoveries in both global and North American exploration settings. Each speaker and their colleagues overcame significant business, technical and professional challenges. Topics to be discussed will include philosophy of exploration, stories from remarkable careers, professional insights, colorful anecdotes and lessons learned on the path to success. As technology advances and young geoscientists enter our profession, the organizers see continued interest in forums such as these. These forums provide a venue for explorers to discuss the personal side of success and what has been called the "art of exploration." Speakers are encouraged to share personal stories about discoveries they know well, to bring forward appropriate technical data and to address questions from the audience and fellow explorers. As always, the audience is fortunate to hear the speakers share abundant technical data and insights derived from costly and hard won experience. HIGHLIGHTS All events take place at BMO Centre at Stampede Park unless otherwise noted. Michel T. Halbouty Lecture: Bay du Nord: A Bold Chase for Oil in a Harsh Frontier Basin Date: Monday, 20 June Time: 5:40 p.m.–6:30 p.m. Location: Hall B, Room 2 Fee: Included with registration Speaker: Tim Dodson, Executive Vice President, Statoil ASA The Michel T. Halbouty Lecture series — funded by the AAPG Foundation — is an ongoing special event at the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition. Lecture topics are designed to focus either on wildcat exploration in any part of the world where major discoveries might contribute significantly to petroleum reserves, or space exploration where astrogeological knowledge would further mankind's ability to develop resources on Earth and in the Solar System. This year's Michel T. Halbouty Lecture speaker is Tim Dodson, Executive Vice President, Statoil ASA and he will discuss the Bay du Nord: A Bold Chase for Oil in a Harsh Frontier Basin. The discovery of Bay du Nord in 2013 was an overnight success 17 years in the making. The story of Statoil offshore Newfoundland began in 1996, and in 2003 the company participated in its first well in the Flemish Pass. The well was disappointing, but through dedicated work and several wells, the oil was chased until the breakthrough came with the impact discovery ten years later. The exploration history of the Flemish Pass is a story of belief, countercyclical thinking and gradual building of knowledge and database. The Bay du Nord discovery is an example of Statoil's global way of exploring through execution with rigor, replenishment of the portfolio and by cultivating the exploration culture. The last years exploration successes are the primary basis for further growth of the company, and the learning will be applied in future exploration efforts both offshore eastern Canada and globally.
