Singapore Management University (SMU) seeks a strong and dynamic intellectual leader to serve as the Dean of the School of Business. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and reports to the Provost. The Dean will work with the Provost to develop an organizational structure; recruit a high caliber faculty and student body; create a climate of intellectual vitality and excellence; support faculty in their teaching, research, and service; oversee financial management of the School; and assume increasing responsibility for the School's fundraising and alumni relations. Incorporated in January 2000, Singapore Management SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY Singapore Dean of the School of Business University, the first privately run university in Singapore to be established with government funding, aspires to the highest international standards of scholarship, research, and teaching. These aspirations have been significantly bolstered by the col- laboration agreements between SMU and The Wharton School. English is used for all communication and instruction. The School of Business was the first school in the university to be established in 2000. It was followed by the School of Accountancy in 2001 and most recently by the School of Economics and Social Sciences in 2002. SMU currently offers a BBM, BAcc, BSc (Economics), MSc (Applied Finance), a dou- ble degree in Business Management and Accountancy, MSc and PhD by research; and an Executive MBA is planned. A faculty of 54 currently serve a class of 1,150 undergraduates with enrollment anticipated to grow to 1,850 in 2005 and 2,200 in 2010 with faculty expanding to 95 and115, respectively. The ideal candidate will possess the following: a record of achievement in teaching and scholarship appropriate for a senior faculty appointment; ability to attract, develop, and retain out- standing faculty and staff; an understanding of and ability to support the full range of disciplines in the School; ability to work effectively and collaboratively with the many internal and external constituents of an urban university; a collegial, consul- tative management style allied with the ability to be strong and decisive; vision, creativity, and resourcefulness; strong advocacy skills coupled with an institutional perspective; a respect for and sensitivity to cultural differences; and leadership ability and management skills with particular strengths in strategic planning and fund raising. An earned doctorate in business or a related discipline and a successful record of teaching and research in an area of international business required. The specific discipline of study is open. Preference will be given to candidates whose scholarly and professional work is in the area of small business, entrepreneurship, or marketing. The successful candi- date will be expected to: • Facilitate interaction between the University and the regional busi- ness community in the area of international business programs. • Actively pursue external funding. • Teach 9–12 credit hours per calendar year. • Develop a program of collaborative research and scholarship consis- tent with the school's mission. • Work with the Dow Chemical Company Centennial Chair in Global Business and SVSU faculty to develop an integrated program in glob- al and international business. The salary, terms and conditions for this position are competitive. The appointment may begin as early as January 1, 2003, but no later than August 15, 2003.
