The event includes a strolling dinner with dishes by top area chefs, plus local wines, high-end raffle items and a live auction featuring packages such as a guided hiking adventure in New Zealand. Co-chaired by the Sardine Factor y's Ber t Cutino and John Narigi of the Monterey Plaza, the festive fundraiser also gives Rancho Cielo students a chance to share their personal and professional success stories. "There is a strength of character that students who come through these gates must show in order to reach the finish line. Some face decision points and barriers and situations that require an integrity and drive that many of us have never had to exhibit," says Rancho Cielo Executive Director Susie Brusa. "The issues that put these students in these situations are deep and com- plex. It is rarely a matter of any one thing" Once they reach Rancho Cielo, she adds, stu- dents must take an active role in shaping their own futures. "For this to be effective, they have to want to participate. They have to see the future for them- selves that we see for them," Brusa says. "It's amazing how these students develop over time." This year's Rancho Cielo Culinary Round Up takes place from 5-8 pm on Sunday, Feb. 21 at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.
