T his year marks the 16th an- niversary of Carmel Magazine. A lot has changed in that time but the quality and beauty of this com- munity has stayed the same. The area never has a shortage of things to showcase in the magazine and we, like many other local businesses, have thankfully pulled through that rough patch of a few years ago and look forward to a promising future with lots of exciting things on the horizon. We have sustained success over the years due to having excellent writing and quality editorial content, which ensure shelf life and a productive environment for advertising. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers, writers, photographers and support staff. You all make this magazine what it is and I am thankful to have your work included. I would also like to thank the advertisers who have found this to be a viable medium. Without you, we could not publish. Speaking of anniversaries, how about this one: Carmel-by- the-Sea turns 100 this year and has planned a yearlong cele- bration. Carmel is a very special place and its rich heritage is really fascinating. Check out our story on page 130 for infor- mation on the centennial celebration and some more details about the history of Carmel. As our friends on the East Coast dig out after a massive bliz- zard, we currently enjoy 60 plus degree weather with sunshine and blue sky. Courtesy of the recent El Niño rains, the hills are lush and green and the Carmel River flows once again. The Monterey Peninsula seems to have no downtime as a year- round destination and for good reason. There is a romance to the area that seduces and satisfies. Non-stop activities with stel- lar events, world-class shopping, dining and wine tasting, tons of great artists and galleries are just part of the equation. Living here or visiting presents so many wonderful opportunities. February brings golf here in a major way, as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am comes to town. To many, it's a chance to observe and get close to the celebrities and to others, the pros are the main draw, but the universal attraction is the courses. The fact is we have these amazing golf courses with the Del Monte Forest on one side and the stunning Pacific Ocean on the other. It's a scenic backdrop for courses that rival any in the world. See story on page 110 to gain some knowledge on how the Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove Golf Links courses came to be. As evidenced by the social pages in the back of the maga- zine, we have no shortage of nonprofits doing powerful work here. We are only able to cover a limited number of them but they all do such a great job of fundraising for worthy causes. It's because of our highly philanthropic community that these events achieve such a high level of success. One such nonprofit group is Rancho Cielo, which serves to transform the lives of at-risk youth in Monterey County. For more information about this amazing organization, see our feature on page 158. In March, The Inn at Spanish Bay hosts a special visit from comedian Jay Leno. He's here to entertain and help fundraise for our local kids at the 23rd Annual Comics for Kids gala. This is a fabulous event that benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County. See the exclusive interview with Leno on page 120. Make the best of every day. Time goes by fast and as we get older it seems to pick up steam.
