Throughout the U.S., many if not most big game hunting lodges like Chama Land and Cattle Company's resort in New Mexico offer guided hunts for spring gobblers. Ditto with other fine properties such as Deer Creek Lodge in Kentucky, Joshua Creek Ranch in Texas and the Gilchrist Club in Florida. Seasons generally open in early April, but check state game and fish agencies for specific dates, license regulations, and bag limits. Early mornings are the most productive time to hunt. Calling a tom from its roost is a hunting feat that transcends turning a flock of geese or ducks to your decoys or rattling up a big buck. And if you're not slinking along a ridgeline listening for an itinerant gobble, you'll likely be out of the woods by noon. After lunch, pick up your rod and cast for bass or trout. There's no finer spring tonic. n
