RETAILOBSERVER.COM MARCH 2016 18 F rom famed American designer Mick De Giulio comes Kitchen, an extensive portfolio of his latest work. Following up on Kitchen Centric— De Giulio's successful 2010 book —Kitchen illustrates De Giulio's belief that the kitchen has become the foremost design priority of the home. Including nine projects—each richly detailed with large color photos and captions—Kitchen opens with a 19th century palazzo in Southern Italy where De Giulio designed the kitchen, terrace and hammam. In this chapter, he also shares sketches and before shots that illustrate the dramatic transformation of an antiquated, dark and disconnected kitchen to a light and airy living space that has become the hub for the family who lives there. Some of the other projects that are featured include a penthouse overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, a lake house in Madison, Wisconsin featuring two back- to-back kitchens, a classic oceanfront home in Vero Beach, and a Victorian home near Boston where the kitchen is part of a very modern renovation. Additionally, a vacation home in Minnesota where De Giulio was first commissioned to design the kitchen and then later asked to continue working throughout the home in the same idiom, illustrates the influence that a kitchen's design can have on other areas of the home. In addition to the large full-bleed photos illustrating each project, close-up images of signature details that distinguish De Giulio's work are included throughout the book, and are highlighted in a special section called Signature Elements. In this section, De Giulio shares his thoughts on innovation: "The magic of kitchen design lies in the opportunity to create something new. I design elements for kitchens because what I think will work best often doesn't exist. And because the kitchen is the hardest working room in the house, it presents the most opportunities to create new solutions that can improve everyday life." Several of De Giulio's most recent signature pieces are featured—from cabinetry to sinks, hoods, plate racks, and hardware. Kitchen offers 280-pages of design inspiration for anyone planning a remodel or looking for ways to update their current kitchen space.
