16 TOBACCO INTERNATIONAL DECEMBER 2015 opportunities in this region of the world alone are staggering." This year, EAC's patent-pending Soil ActivatorTM obtained full registration by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Ecocert organic certification. EAC is also in the final stages of registration approval in West Africa by the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) and Southern African Development Community (SADC). In Tek-Mac field trials, a combination of EAC's Soil ActivatorTM and Tek-Mac's Good n' Green fertilizer produced wheat crop yields that were up to 33 percent higher than unfertilized wheat. Breaking those results down further, the addition of Soil ActivatorTM to Good n' Green fertilizer produced an extra 12 percent compared with the application of Good n' Green fertilizer alone. Smoke-Free Association: CDC Rep Says E-Cigs Less Harmful washington, d.c.—An abstract on the viability of claims that e-cigs are less harmful than combustible cigarettes was recently published by the Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association (SFATA). "Apparently, a state health department tobacco control practitioner attended a webinar in which Dr. Terry Pechacek from CDC explained that electronic cigarettes are much safer than tobacco cigarettes and that therefore, moving all current cigarette smokers to exclusive use of e-cigarettes would be a good thing. Similarly, Dr. Brian King of CDC noted that it would have positive public health benefits if all smokers switched to exclusive e-cigarette use." 22nd Century's New York Labs to Reduce R&D Costs clarence, n.y.—To reduce research and development costs for new products, 22nd Century Group will open "specialized laboratories in Western New York dedicated to new scientific research at substantially lower costs than sponsored research projects at third-party universities." The 22nd Century Group is a leading plant biotechnology company and a leader in tobacco harm reduction. The new initiative is led by Paul J. Rushton, Ph.D., 22nd Century vice president of plant biotechnology, who will seek to "accelerate the development of nicotine-free tobacco varieties and important tobacco products." "What's more, using our own labs will enable us to own, outright, the patents that we develop rather than having to license them from sponsored third-party researchers." 22nd Century has 200 issued patents and 50 pending patent applications as well as a licensing agreement with BAT.
