20 How to Scaffold Literacy Instruction with Young Learners Literacy Corner 1 Read TO your students: Modeling comes first! • Read aloud while modeling how to use reading skills and strategies. Show interest and enthusiasm while you read! 2 Read WITH your students: Gradually give them more responsibility. • Big Book Shared Reading: Use the big books while the students use the readers to read together as a class. Model reading strategies and skills, while encouraging students to participate when they can, especially if there is a line that is repeated throughout the story. • Choral Reading: Have students (individually, in pairs, or in small groups) take turns reading the text out loud. Students should each have their own copy of the book or text. If the text is a story, students can do a dramatic reading, known as Readers Theater, acting out the story like a play and reading the lines for each character. • Guided Reading: Have students read unfamiliar texts in small groups based on their reading level using the reading skills and strategies and the language (i.e., vocabulary, grammar) they have learned. The teacher selects the text and provides guidance when necessary. For guided reading to be effective, all students must have their own copy of the book. 3 Reading DONE BY your students: Encourage them to read independently or in groups for both pleasure and getting information. • Literacy Centers: Set up a designated space for a Literacy Center in your classroom where students can go to read independently or in guided reading groups or Literature Circles. • Literature Circles: Divide students into small groups to read and discuss the same story together. To help facilitate discussion, give your students a group project to complete related to the story (character poster, plot book, etc).
