58 SMOKESHOP February 2016 UPDATE Pipe Amphora, Now Mac Baren-Owned, Returns to U.S. Market Amphora, an old world classic pipe tobacco, has returned to the new world. Amphora's history goes back over 150 years and after a long absence from the market, Amphora is returning to the U.S. following the acquisition of the Imperial Tobacco Group portfolio of pipe tobacco brands by Mac Baren Tobacco Company in 2015. Having been made in Denmark by Mac Baren for over a decade, this is the same Amphora blend that is the No. 1 brand of pipe tobacco around the world. Initially, Amphora will be available domestically in two blends. Amphora Full Aroma (Red) is the most popular of the Amphora blends. It uses the best bright golden Virginia leaf, Burley, and dark-fired tobaccos. It is moderately flavored with a high-quality mixture of fruits and chocolate. A favorite in Europe for decades thanks to its excellent room note and taste, it is finished in a ready rubbed format for ease of packing and smoking. Amphora Regular (Brown) is the original blend made from a base of Burley and Cavendish. Turkish, Virginia, and some dark-fired tobaccos are added to this complex mixture, followed by a topping of cocoa to the ribbon cut tobaccos to create a well-rounded blend that emphasizes the natural sweetness of the Burley, accented by the cocoa. This is the original blend that set Amphora on the way to becoming a world-class name in pipe tobacco. "One of the most frequent questions we receive from consumers is, 'I really liked Amphora when I could get it. What do you have that is similar?' Now I can tell them we have it," says Brian Levine, v.p. of sales and marketing at Sutliff Tobacco, a subsidiary of Danish manufacturer Mac Baren Co. Amphora is available in five 50gm pouches per display box. Further blends in the Amphora line will be introduced in the near future. Described as an "opulent blend of zesty Virginias from the U.S. and Brazil, mixed with creamy Cyprian Latakia and cold pressed for a minimalist, sophisticated all-day English mixture," Giubileo d'Oro is a medium-bodied, medium-strength mixture with a "restrained presence" of Latakia. While Savinelli's Giubileo d'Oro briar pipes are crafted from only a tiny fraction of the company's top grade of briar holdings and retail from $500 to $860 each, Giubileo d'Oro pipe tobacco is accessible to all pipe smokers, with a suggested retail price of $14 per 50gm tin.
