Dow College of Health Professions turns 15 this year. This college was formed with programs from numerous units across campus. Its formation was championed by faculty advocates like Herm Triezenberg, Syd Walston, Renny Tatchell and Rich Parr; along with the vision and support of former Provost Richard Davenport and former President Leonard Plachta. Today it seems hard to imagine Central Michigan University without The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. This relatively young college benefi ts from the enthusiasm of a teenaged organization and the sagacity of mature programs. We maintain the strong commitment to teaching excellence that come from our normal school roots as we develop our reputation and responsibility in the research enterprise. We have managed to combine the best of the history of CMU with its future. The results are phenomenal. Our history is fi lled with fi rsts. We developed the fi rst Doctor of Audiology program in the country. We had the fi rst academic major in Athletic Training. We off ered the fi rst executive Doctor of Health Administration program. We were among the fi rst named colleges of health professions in the country. Our faculty is not afraid to lead. Today, we have more student interest in our programs than we could have possibly imagined 15 years ago. Certainly job prospects in the health professions helps fuel student interest, but such talented students have choices in where they attend college and many selected CMU and CHP as their top choice. We have so much student interest, in fact, that we are quickly outgrowing our beautiful, 8-year-old state-of- the-art building. Our research productivity has increased dramatically in just a few short years, with grant and contract activity increasing 326 percent. Our faculty is successfully competing for federal research grants and is growing clinically relevant contracts with local and regional organizations. The halls of the Health Professions Building are buzzing with conversations of new research ideas among faculty and students. Our alumni and friends have shown their support for our successes as well. Philanthropic support for the College is up since fi scal year 2009-10, including many new student scholarships. We have seen a 10-percent increase in the number of donors, as well. This support is critical as we continue to develop our programs. To quote the 1980s rock group Timbuk3, "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades." Christopher D. Ingersoll, Ph.D., ATC Dean, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions P.S.
