And the College of Health Professions is giving another reason to go out and enjoy the game of golf. From 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 24, the 12th annual Health Professions Golf Tournament will take place at The Mount Pleasant Country Club for a greater reason than leisurely play. Organizer and Physical Education and Sports Professor Scott Smith, Ph.D., says attendees will raise money to support the Health Professions Student Economic Assistance Fund, which helps students who are facing a fi nancial crisis that may prevent them from continuing their education. Students can apply for this funding through an application process that the Dean of the College of Health Professions would have to approve by checking their fi nancial aid status to ensure that they are facing an emergency hardship. Smith says the funds help students in need. For example, a graduate student was recently granted funds to travel home – when she was in a position of having to choose between paying traveling costs or tuition costs – to be with her family, who lived in Brazil, after the loss of her father. In the past the student hosted and planned tournament has produced $9,000 in net profi t with eff orts from 85 golfers, Smith says. "We were looking for a good cause that made sense to the college and the students," Smith says. "And this is it." • Thanks 2011 sponsors: 22 Summer 2012 • Pulse
