Reconnecting as alumni As each issue of Spectrum illustrates, the College of Science and Technology boasts many accomplishments worthy of your support and pride. Recent successes such as the Institute for Great Lakes Research and new opportunities in astronomy are made possible by faculty, staff and students collaborating with CST alumni. The college's strongest supporters include many alumni. We celebrate our past and applaud everyone who helped build a solid foundation, but need more active alumni to support the college's mission and future growth. Dean Ian Davison recently revised the CST Alumni Board to provide members with more autonomy and to focus on promoting and advancing CST and CMU. The Executive Committee, responsible for board governance, includes Kim Summers (chair), Martin Steinbis (vice chair), Pam Spencer and Curt White. On behalf of the CST Alumni Board, we invite you to get involved. Every program has needs and there are many ways to participate. One especially valuable activity is introducing students to professional opportunities, perhaps by volunteering to be a guest speaker, CMU will welcome a new addition to the Fabiano Botanical Garden this summer. The Faith Johnston Children's Garden will be planted as part of the Plants and Society Collection located in open space west of Charles V. Park Library. Through a special fundraising campaign the garden will be named to honor the memory of Faith Johnston, a 46-year member of the biology department . mentoring a student in a summer job, participating in our annual Alumni Career Day, or encouraging your company to establish an internship program. Like many worthy organizations, CST needs increased financial support to maintain a vibrant college and its valuable programs. Gail Moore, director of development, continues to assist alumni who wish to support CST initiatives. Renovations to the boathouse at CMU's Biological Station on Beaver Island, the new observatory dome, and this summer's Research Experience for Undergraduates Program are each supported by generous donors. To learn more about making a financial contribution, contact Gail at gail.moore@ cmich.edu or 989-774-3773. The CST Alumni Board encourages the participation of alumni who graduated in the last five to 10 years and who can connect with today's students. If you are interested in sharing your time or expertise, please contact Kim Summers at kimsummers78@yahoo.com. You will be glad that you reconnected with alumni who remain passionate about CST and CMU!
