Following a runner-up finish in the C-USA Championships and with a No. 33 national ranking, Memphis earned its first berth into the NCAA Championships. Memphis took on Baylor, ranked No. 25, in Starkville, Miss., on the campus of Mississippi State University.

The Tigers grabbed the doubles point behind a win at No. 1 singles from David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury and a thrilling tie-break victory by Leon Nasemann and Johnny Grimal. David O'Leary gave Memphis its second point with a win at No. 5 singles, but the U of M was unable to outlast Baylor in the four-and-a-half-hour marathon and succumbed, 4-2.
