Feb. 8, 2012 – a day that will go down in University of Memphis history and also a moment that will be long-remembered by Tiger Nation. In an 11 a.m. (CT) press conference, University President Shirley Raines and Athletics Director R.C. Johnson announced the Tigers athletics program was moving to the Big East Conference beginning in 2013. With that announcement, the roars of Tigers fans could be heard coast- to-coast.
Two days later (Feb. 10), the Big East welcomed Memphis to the conference in a big New York City way with video boards proclaiming "Memphis Tigers - Welcome To The BIG EAST!" in Times Square. The video boards, located on the corner of 46th and Broadway, ran the Tigers' welcome message for 30 seconds every hour on Feb. 10.
