Auctions & Exhibitions COEUR D' ALENE AUCTION TO OFFER MAJOR PAINTINGS BY KUHN, GOODWIN The 27th Annual Coeur d' Alene Art Auction will be held on July 21 at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno. "After the rousing success of our 2011 sale, a number of great consignments came in earlier than ever this year," said auction partner Mike Overby. "We had the sale pretty well filled by the end of March!" Coeur d' Alene is known for its record-breaking sales of traditional western paintings, though sporting art has always been a focus. Four Bob Kuhn paintings will be offered, including two of his best African scenes: A Near Miss, $100,000- 150,000, and Lions Perusing the Menu, $80,000-120,000. Elephant Playtime, by acclaimed English artist David Shepherd, will also be sold. The 24x42 oil is estimated at $50,000-70,000. One of Philip R. Goodwin's finest oils will hit the block. Fresh from a private British Columbia collection, Unexpected Guests is estimated at $60,000-90,000. "We've sold many Goodwins over the years, but this is as strong as we've ever seen," said Overby. F rom top: This rare Savage 1899 is expected to bring $35,000-$45,000 at James D. Julia's fall firearms sale. • Philip Goodwin's Unexpected Guests will be a featured painting at the Coeur d' Alene Auction. • Moonlight Hunters by Tim Shinabarger will highlight the 29th annual Fall Classics Show. SPOR TIN G CL ASSICS 168 A very unique offering will be a complete set of etchings by Ogden Pleissner. The artist only did eight etchings in his lifetime and this is one of the only complete collections in existence. "The owner spent decades putting this together," Overby noted. "There are a couple etchings here that are extremely rare, which is why it would be so difficult to replicate. For many years the owner had seven but the last one eluded him until I happened across one. I'm not sure who was happier, myself or the collector." Rounding out the sporting side
