looking back USA HOCKEY TIMELINE USA Hockey Heads Into New Millennium As USA Hockey celebrates its 75th anniversary, USA Hockey Magazine looks back at the events that have shaped our sport. By HARRY THOMPSON Feb. 25, 2010 Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados turns aside 28 shots and the Americans fail to capitalize on a pair of 5-on-3 power plays as the host country scores a 2-0 victory to win the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. 2010 Jan. 5, 2010 Defenseman John Carlson's overtime goal lifts the U.S. National Junior Team to the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. The victory marks the second first-place finish in the Under-20 World Championship, coming six years after the first win in 2004. Jan. 5, 2011 The curtain closes on the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship. The 11-day tournament, staged Dec. 26-Jan. 5 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N. N. Y., and Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, Y., drew 331,297 fans for the 31 total games (10,687 average per game). April 9, 2011 The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs captures its first-ever NCAA title with a 3-2 overtime vic- tory over the University of Michigan at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Sept. 6, 2011 USA Hockey launches a series of age-specific online coaching education modules that address on-ice skill development and team concepts, as well as off-ice training and overall athlete wellness. 12 Dec. 12, 2010 Michigan and Michigan State face off in the Big House before a world record crowd of 113,411. The game shatters the mark set seven months earlier when the United States played Germany at the 2010 IIHF World Championship. June 26, 2010 Fifty-nine Americans were selected dur- ing the 2010 NHL Entry Draft held in Los Angeles, including a record 11 players chosen in the first round. In addition, a record-tying 21 American players were selected in the first two rounds, tying the mark set in 2007. Nov. 5, 2011 More than 11,000 kids across the United States tried hockey for the first time as part of Try Hockey For Free Day. Oct. 19, 2011 Sept. 21, 2011 Mike Modano, the NHL's all-time points leader among U.S.-born players, retires after a 21-year career. Over the course of the season, the national governing body for ice hockey staged a number of events to honor its 75 years as an organization, capped off by a special celebration on June 8 in Colorado Springs. Nov. 8, 2010 American Cammi Granato and Canada's Angela James become the first women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Granato won Olympic gold at the 1998 Nagano Games and silver in 2002 in Salt Lake City, playing in every World Championship for the U.S. Women's National Team from the inaugural event in 1990 to 2005. March 1, 2010 Zach Parise scores with 23 seconds left in regulation to send the gold- medal game against Canada into overtime at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Sidney Crosby's goal at the 7:40 mark of the extra session sends Canada into a national celebration. June 9, 2010 Patrick Kane scores overtime goal to end the Chicago Blackhawks' 49-year Stanley Cup drought. March 20, 2010 The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team wins its second-ever gold medal at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games thanks to a 2-0 shutout victory over Japan. Led by goaltender Steve Cash, Team USA did not surrender a goal in all five of its games at the tournament, outscoring its opponents, 19-0. April 7, 2012 Gutterson Fieldhouse and Cairns Arena host the top female hockey players in the world as the 2012 IIHF Women's World Championship gets under way in Burlington, Vt.
