They then took their best blend and made three variations, making only small adjustments to try to refine the blend. Participation was limited to 32 people. The 2016 U.S. National Pipe Smoking Championship, or- ganized by the United Pipe Clubs of America (UPCA) during the second day of the show, drew 75 participants to compete in the contest which used UPCA Calumet, a Virginia blend. American Tom Dinelli of Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club was the overall winner at 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 22 seconds, while Manduela Riger-Kusk of Denmark came in first place in the women's division at 43 minutes 8 seconds. The St. Peters- burg pipe club won the team competition. During the show, Tsuge Pipes displayed a collection of his- toric pipes in honor of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the company, showcasing pipes dating from 1936 to present. In addition, J. Wittkamp displayed a portion of his pipe collection entitled "The great Danes of Sixten's workshop" which includ- ed 15 pipes from Sixten Ivarsson, Lars Ivarsson, Jorn Micke, Jess Chonowitsch and Nanna Ivarsson. Entirely new for next will be a meerschaum pipe carving seminar that will run for three days and span three consecu- tive years. The first year (2017) will be a paper and pencil-only design workshop of the pipe. During year two (2018), partici- pants will drill the tobacco chamber and airway into the block of meerschaum using machines that the club owns. During year three (2019), participants will carve—with hand tools only—the pipe they designed in first year and drilled in the second year. Participants will get to keep their completed pipe. Once registration opens, payment (to be determined) will be required for the entire three-year course. No new admissions will be allowed once the first seminar is under way, and if a participant misses a year, there are no "makeup" classes. Also for 2017, the show's traditional Saturday night cigar (and steak) dinner will be receiving a complete makeover, Di- nelli reported, right down to its name, as well as expanded food choices and the addition of door prizes. The Chicagoland International Pipe and Tobacciana Show returns to Pheasant Run Resort May 6–7, 2017. For additional information, visit VAPOR NATION 1/2H 400 W.
