34 Application and Interview Checklist Consider the following before applying for positions or going to the interview. Are you ready to go? Résumé • • Clear and consistent format. Information doesn't exceed 1 page, unless you have significant and tangible experiences! Multiple pages allowed for K-‐12 positions or for those in higher education. • Descriptive bullet points using the beginning, middle, and end result format. • Cover letter • • Can anyone pick up your résumé and have a clear understanding of the message you are conveying? • Have you had your résumé critiqued by REACH Advisors in Career Services? Check Career Services (http://www.careers.cmich.edu) for walk-‐in document critiquing hours and days. Is the letter specific to the position that you are seeking? Is the letter 3-‐4 paragraphs consisting of information about the organization/position in all paragraphs? • Do you corroborate the information about the organization and the skills you have to offer? • Are you giving specific examples of what EXPERIENCES you have to offer the company? o Do not use general statements like: "I am a dedicated and trust worthy individual and can bring a lot of experience to the table." Statements like this would be fine as long as the next sentence (or two) contains specific information and examples to justify the generic statement. Interview • Have you researched the organization/position on their website? Research the mission, values and accomplishments of the organization; you can even research specific employees! • Do you have questions crafted that you can ask the interviewer at the end of the interview? • Have you completed a Mock Interview with Career Services? If not, sign up at http://cmich.experience.com. • Have you made sure that your interview attire is sending a correct and professional image/message? • Follow-‐up • Take a copy of your reference list with you, if you didn't include the information with your résumé and cover letter. You never know, you could be asked for references during the interview process! Did you write down the names and contact information of all the interviewers you met with? This is important for future follow-‐up and to send them (all) a thank you note! • Whether an e-‐mail or hand-‐written note, thank you notes after the interview are MANDATORY. Make sure to send off the notes within 48 hours of the interview.
