U.S. CAPITOL HISTORICAL SOCIETY This photograph shows the first stage of the East Front extension, when the sandstone central porco was removed. 1958–1962 CONSTRUCTION CONCLUDES ON THE NEWMARBLE EAST FRONT With a newmarble exterior wall 32.5 feet east of the old sandstone front, this Capitol extension added 90 new rooms and an underground subway terminal. The work was overseen by Architect of the Capitol J. George Stewart, who had served one termin the House in the 1930s and was architect from1954 unl his death in office in 1970. President John F. Kennedy speaks at the cornerstone ceremony. May 24, 1962 CORNERSTONE CEREMONY FOR NEWEST HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING The building was later named for Speaker SamRayburn; full occupancy began in February 1965 when 169members and nine commieesmoved in. It has four stories, two basement levels, and three subterranean parking levels. A subway connects it to the Capitol, and pedestrian tunnels connect it to the adjacent Longworth Building.
