C ommunity Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) is known for its rela- tively tranquil vibe, considering it's a 220- bed hospital offering major services. The natural light, forest setting and private rooms, some with Bay views, help put patients at ease. "It's part of the vision of creating an overall healing environment," says Brenda Moore, assis- tant director of communication and marketing. Donated works of art, water features, and calming piano and harp music are all part of the exceptional offerings. Most recently, CHOMP has become the first hospital in the nation to adopt the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBAQ) Seafood Watch guidelines. "We serve approximately 1800 meals a day, including staff and visitors," says Joe Abluton, retail supervisor in nutrition services. "We are definitely not the stereotypical hospital food and serve prime rib and 5-6 species of fish." Abluton says becoming compliant has been a bit of a challenge. "You need to have an exact species and know how its caught and what part of the ocean it's from," he explains. "The vendors aren't used to coming up with that information." But while it requires extra work and increased cost, CHOMP is committed to using local vegetables as much as possible, reducing energy and water output, and using biodegrad- able products when possible. "It's so simple," Abluton says. "Without the ocean and without nature, we are nothing. We won't survive."
