We also are a qualifying competition and the series final for the Great American Insurance Group/USDF Breeders Championship East Coast Series. In addition, we are hosting the 14 th annual Born in the USA Breeders Awards. All competitions are FEI, USEF and USDF recognized. We are also pleased to present the amazing white stallions of the Tempel Lipizzans with in-hand and mounted exhibitions featuring movements such as the levade, courbette, capriole and the group presentation called quadrille. These beautiful horses are descendants of the horses threatened by numerous wars. In the 1700s the horses were moved three times during the Napoleonic Wars. During WWI they were moved again and divided between Italy and Austria. At that time there were only 208 Lipizzans known to be in existence. Once again their existence was threatened when they were moved to Czechoslovakia and directly in the path of the Russian army during WWII. To protect them destruction, US General George Patton lead the Second Cavalry behind enemy lines to guard the horses, thus saving the breed. In 1955 the herd was returned to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Tempel Lipizzans began in 1958 when Tempel and Esther Smith imported 20 Lipizzans from the Austrian stud in Piber. Wow! Talk about tradition! The Festival Area is famous for its culinary offerings, voted "best food on the show circuit" by competitors and spectators who can enjoy the many options from soup to nuts. Relax in "The Pub at Devon" with its closed circuit coverage of the competition or take your refreshments to one of the outdoor seating areas. Want to learn more about dressage?
