SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL Car Week Closes with Record Sales and Funds Raised for Charity A team of student volunteers, alumni and faculty members from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey attended this year's Rio Summer Olympics, working as interpreters and translators at several on-site events. Professional interpreters were involved with medal winners' press conferences, main press center gatherings and International Olympic Committee meetings, among other affairs. Middlebury Institute professors and graduates have assist- ed with communications duties at the Olympics since the 1984 sum- mer games in Los Angeles, serving under the leadership of adjunct pro- fessor and former dean Bill Weber at 15 Olympic gatherings. MIIS Students and Faculty Assist at the Rio Olympics T his year's Pebble Beach Auctions, a Gooding & Company event held in con- junction with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance each August, set a company record with more than $129.8 million in sales closed over two days. Four vehicles commanded more than $10 million each, while another 26 cars sold over the $1 million mark. Notewor thy items on the auction block included a 1979 Porsche 935 driven by Paul Newman at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione that sold for $18,150,000. Meanwhile, a 1936 Lancia Astura Pinin Farina Cabriolet once owned by guitarist Eric Clapton took top honors at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Owner and first- time entrant Richard Mattei's vehicle also earned the Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Conver tible award, and placed first in the European Classic Early class. Vehicles from 16 countries and 30 states competed in this year's Pebble Beach Concours, with 228 cars lining the show field on August 21. The event also raised more than $1.75 million for the Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Those funds will help suppor t more than 80 local charitable organizations. Photographs by renowned ar tists Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange are among works on display during "Re: Pose: Photographs", open through Januar y 17, 2017, at the Monterey Museum of Ar t. The exhibition spotlights select images from the museum's permanent collec- tion, and each piece explores subjects in ordi- nar y and extraordinar y circumstances. The Museum's annual "Miniatures" exhibition, a fundraiser featuring the paintings, photographs, mixed media works and sculptures of local artists, also continues through Januar y 13, 2017. For details, visit www.montereyart.org. Actress Kaitlin Doubleday, who plays Rhonda in the television series "Empire," mar- ried DJ Devin Lucien in Big Sur this spring. "People" and "Us Weekly" were among publica- tions sharing pictures of the private outdoor ceremony, and the couple also posted several shots on Instagram following the event. Doubleday's "Empire" co-star Gabourey Sidibe attended the wedding, as did Lee Daniels, who created the hit Fox series. Local resident and former Carmel-by-the- Sea mayor Clint Eastwood served as Grand Marshal for the city's centennial celebration.
