Rohana LoSchiavo helps newcom- ers navigate the offerings through Carmel Art Tours, a 90-minute outing that highlights major galleries and under-the-radar gems tucked in the city's courtyards. LoSchiavo launched the public walking tour in 2015, building on her experience leading gallery walks and guided Cannery Row tours for cor- porate groups. She provides local historical con- text and customizes excursions to clients' inter- ests, making six to eight stops that spotlight photographers, painters, sculptors, glass artists and others. LoSchiavo, director at Carmel's Gallery Sur, also capitalizes on personal connec- tions she has forged during three decades in the fine art world. She introduces tour guests to artists at work in their studios, and encourages clients to ask questions. "The tours provide an opportunity to delve deeper into the artist's creative process than you might have with your own casual gallery walk-through," says LoSchiavo. "At the end of every tour, someone says, 'I would never have found that gallery on my own.' Leading that jour- ney of discovery is very satisfying."
