Madrigal Celebrates 40 Year s of Retail Excellence B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D T his past July first, Marian Mizelle celebrat- ed a milestone: Madrigal for Men and Women, the shop she founded with late hus- band Elliot, marked its 40th year of selling qual- ity clothing to the women and men of Carmel. "It certainly doesn't seem like 40 years," Mizelle says. "We're now seeing the grandchil- dren of people who have shopped—and still shop—here." Marian was steeped in fashion design, having designed dresses for big-name houses including Mr. Mor t and Gay Gibson. Some of her sketch- es adorn the walls of Madrigal. Elliot had a hos- pitality background and together they created a shop that is widely known for not only exqui- site apparel, but for exceptional service. Back in 1976, Madrigal was comprised of one space in the Carmel Plaza, and offered only women's apparel. Today's shop is in four spaces and also includes a men's line. "When we opened, a $200 cashmere sweater was viewed as quite expensive," Mizelle says. "But today, that same sweater would sell for $1,900." But some things never change: "We're still serving up classic elegance with some champagne bubbles," she adds with a laugh. "And we're blessed with a loyal clientele." Madrigal is located in Carmel Plaza, Ocean Avenue and Mission Street, Carmel. 831/624-3477. SHORTCUTS BUSINESS Marian Mizelle founded Madrigal with her late husband Elliot 40 years ago.
