32 | JOURNEY IN MEMORY DR. PAUL BREWER, SR. 87, d. June 28, 2016, professor of philosophy and religion. A 1951 alumnus, Brewer was a native of South Pittsburg, Tennessee. After Carson- Newman he earned his doctorate in philosophy from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, while simultaneously earning a master's degree in English from Texas Christian University. He joined Carson- Newman's faculty in 1958 and taught for 38 years. He was noted as a demanding professor, but one who always encouraged and nurtured his students' development. Other service to the University included stints in administrative roles, football coach and the driving force behind the Honors Program. He also received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1980. He also served as pastor and interim pastor at various churches. He was a member of Jefferson City's First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Imogene '52, two sons, several grandchildren and great-children. RACHEL FEEHAN 18, d. Aug. 5, 2016, incoming freshman. She attended Fellowship North Church in Knoxville. An avid reader, she was a graduate of Berean Christian School. She is survived by her parents Tammy '88 and Mark Freehan, sister Hannah and several extended family members. ROBERT CLYDE "R.C." FOX 94, d. Oct 2, 2016, trustee. A native of the Dutch Valley Community in Clinton, Fox was a long-time member of Carson-Newman's Board of Trustees, beginning his service in 1971. He served with emeritus status starting in 2004. In 1995, he earned the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for outstanding service. A veteran, he was heavily involved in the community, serving on the Development Council at the University of Tennessee and was a charter member of the Nathan Daughtery Society. He was also deacon at First Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, and was later a member of First Baptist Church, Clinton. He also served as an Anderson County commissioner and was a councilman for the City of Oliver Springs. He is survived by his wife Maud Parten Fox, two daughters, one son, several grandchildren and extended family. CARL WOODS, JR. 83, d. Aug. 21, 2016, security guard. A member of Mansfield Gap Baptist Church, Woods served as campus security guard from 1987 until his retirement in 1997. A veteran, he was preceded in death by his wife Louise Woods, and is survived by two sons, one granddaughter and several extended family members.
