Poor diet and physical activity may soon overtake tobacco as the leading cause of death. About 70% of smokers say they would like to quit. Only 31.9% of local adults are at healthy weight. Habits arise through repetition, and can develop when good or enjoyable events trigger the brain's "reward" centers. We're asking you to develop healthy habits by making a pledge to your own health. Our One Life campaign that began earlier this year asks individuals in our communities to make a pledge to their health – one clear, easy step that puts them on a track to health and wellness. It can be as simple as parking in the furthest spot at work, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. I made my pledge: Eat more appropriately and along with exercise, lose about 10 lbs and keep it off, lowering my cholesterol in the process. We ask that you join us if you haven't already by making a pledge to your own health. You can fill out a pledge flag at our events throughout the fall, or online at www.onelifepledge.org.
