A s I sit down to write this, we are coming off another wet and wild weekend here in Carmel. The rainfall amounts, especially up in the hills, are impressive and should go a long way toward diminishing the seemingly endless drought. I'm glad to see the rivers flowing and the mountains turning a very lush green but also aware of the havoc and fear instilled by flooding and potential landslides. I hope our friends in Big Sur remain safe. Today I dream of warmer weather and sunshine. One of the consistent things we can all count on in life is how unpre- dictable it is. 2016 was a crazy year by all accounts. We are all ready for some sense of normalcy and stability as it seems like there has been a real roller coaster of emotions for so many and the time has come to work together and look ahead. This issue of Carmel Magazine cel- ebrates many of the things that make the Monterey Peninsula a destination that is second to none. As a place to live or visit, there is no better location. Our cover story features Pebble Beach resident and CBS Sportscaster Jim Nantz and gives you a glimpse into his per- sonal life and career on levels that most are not aware of. I recently watched a playoff game that pitted the Pittsburg Steelers against the New England Patriots in what turned out to be a one-sided game. Nantz has a way to call a game that is much different than his counterpart on FOX. He has a precise delivery with a great voice and he allows the commentary to flow in a way that is both meaningful and non-biased. He paces himself. He throws out stories and facts throughout the game and never gets in the way or becomes obnoxious. It's the same with his golf broadcasts. His coverage of the Masters and PGA tourna- ments like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am are extraordinary. His knowledge is undeniable and his love for this area and his family runs deep. This year, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am has some amaz- ing talent on both the celebrity side and the pro golf side. Always an exciting time here on the Peninsula, this year's lineup and the beauty of the courses are not to be missed. Check out the feature in this issue to learn more. Another local who is a master of his craft is composer Alan Silvestri. His artistry and talent is undeniable as his many awards prove. His success is well deserved and he and his wife Sandra could not be nicer people. They are proud to live here and give back to our community in a big way. We are lucky to have them here. For those of you familiar with James Corden, you likely have seen the Carpool Karaoke clips on YouTube and "The Late, Late Show." If you are not familiar with him, you need to become so. He is a super funny guy entertainer who has a way of making you feel good. He's become extremely popular and is the host of many major award shows. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County has landed him to entertain ticket hold- ers for their annual fundraiser in March called Comics for Kids. The interview in this issue is amazing and I look forward to seeing him live in March. For a visual treat, check out the striking images of the late photojournalist and former Pebble Beach resident John G. Zimmerman. His family is releasing a book of his early black- and-white works, some of which are seen here. Another photography feature in this issue represents the colorful work of Carmel resident Gary Geiger. His trips around the world have resulted in some beautiful art. Also in this issue are many other amazing people, businesses and places—all of which help make up the highly diverse area we get to call home. I am very positive about things to come and this year promises to be a great one.
