Spring Retreat Brings Writer s to the Redwoods B Y R E N E E B R I N C K S W riting can be a solitary process, espe- cially for novelists not centered in major cities, says editorial and publishing con- sultant Heather Lazare. The Carmel native experienced this firsthand when she returned to the area after working for Random House, Simon & Schuster and others. So, Lazare teamed up with colleague Chelsea Lindman, a literary agent living in the Bay Area, to launch the Northern California Writers' Retreat. The second-annual event takes place March 15-19, gathering 14 fiction writers in the Santa Cruz Mountains for workshops and networking. Days begin with breakfast under the redwoods and free time to write. Lunchtime conversations explore the publishing process and working with agents; "Sweetbitter" author Stephanie Danler, this year's author in residence, will also share insight. Participants discuss their own proj- ects in afternoon workshops, followed by optional yoga classes and dinner. Evening net- working takes place at the outdoor fire pit, over s'mores and wine. Writers from as far away as Florida and New York attended last year's retreat, and several re- applied for the 2017 gathering. "Our goal is to have everyone leave with a new writing partner or two," says Lazare. "It's great knowing that we can help authors make connections and strengthen their work."
