S P O R T I N G C L A S S I C S • 157 JULIA'S FIREARMS SALE FEATURES QUALITY, RARITY And HISTORY James D. Julia's next Firearms Auction, set for April 11-13, will once again feature a spectacular lineup of fine sporting arms. Leading the pack will be a recently discovered 20-gauge Parker A-1 Special. This magnificent gun, in original and untouched condition, is game-scene engraved and fitted with a straight stock. The Parker gun was consigned to Julia's after remaining in a home in Connecticut for many years. This is the first time it has seen the light of day. It carries a presale estimate of $125,000-200,000. Among a number of historic items will be a rare treasure from the infamous Custer massacre at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. A Colt Single Action Army used by one of Custer's troopers was picked up at the battlefield by Captain Benteen during the burial detail. It is the only complete handgun known to exist with positive provenance to the engagement. As such, it is the most important item ever offered from the battle. It carries a presale estimate of $175,000-275,000. The sale will include a diverse number of outstanding firearms from the renowned Warren Buxton collection of Walther Arms, the most comprehensive and important of its type ever offered; the Dr. Zack Catterton collection of rare Confederate arms; and the Doug Buhler collection of extraordinary and rare Picklehaubes. SCOTTSdALE ART AUCTIOn AnnOUnCES 12TH AnnUAL SALE Now in its 12th year, Scottsdale Art Auction will host its next annual sale on Saturday, April 8, with sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. In addition to fine Western art, the auction will present a number of sporting paintings and sculptures at its state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Names like Philip R. Goodwin, Carl Rungius, and Frank Benson will be joined by modern masters such as David Shepherd, Bob Kuhn, and Luke Frazier. Philip R. Goodwin's classic American predicament painting, Dangerous Sport ($120,000-180,000), captures a hunter, dog, and an enraged grizzly bear in an exciting composition. Bob Kuhn's kinetic 180 Degrees ($80,000-120,000) pits a golden eagle swooping down to attack a coyote. David Shepherd's classic African scene, Old George Under His Favorite Baobab Tree ($40,000-60,000), makes the dust of Africa come to life. All works will be on view two weeks prior to the auction, and there will be an all-day preview and evening party on Friday, April 7. The auction's knowledgeable staff will be on hand to assist bidders, provide condition reports, and expedite shipping. Full- color catalogs will be available, and every lot will be on view at www. scottsdaleartauction.com. Entitled 180 Degrees, this dramatic painting by Bob Kuhn could bring upwards of $180,000 at Scottsdale Art Auction's April sale. Right: Used by one of Custer's Troopers, this Colt SAA ($175,000-275,000) will be auctioned by James D. Julia in April. It is the only complete handgun known to exist from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
