The clients for this kitchen asked designer
Gina Bon for more space with an open
feel, lots of light, and cohesion with the
family room. They also asked that the new
kitchen match their modern tastes.
Breaking through a wall into the family
room, the designer enlarged the area to 40
by 15 feet. A large beam permits a wide,
open space, while an island with a prep
sink offers views of the backyard and easy
visual access to guests. Hidden niches
provide storage for small appliances, and a
carved limestone backsplash serves as a
focal point behind the range.

This mid-century modern kitchen experi-
enced a dramatic makeover that incorporated
an adjacent, little-used family room. The
designers added plenty of stainless steel for
a fully integrated look, including a scullery
sink that accommodates easy cleanup. A
floating shelf and column that anchors one
end of the scullery becomes a focal point,
while the custom cold-rolled-steel-and-glass
hood provides a dramatic element.
Special features include radiant floor heating,
stainless steel cabinetry above and below the
ovens, and a beverage peninsula.
