The maroon Whitham colors were on the
map.
"She brought us lot of enjoyment,"
Whitham said. "We had nearly three years
with her and went to all her races. She got
us hooked."
In December, 1993, the Whitham fami-
ly endured an unspeakable tragedy when
Frank Whitham died when his private plane
went down in a crash near Goodland, Kan-
sas. Janis Whitham did the only thing she
could; she carried on.
"Frank's death just broke me up," McAnally
said. "He was such a wonderful guy. The
whole family is that way. Jan stayed in it.
She was always the one who really liked the
horses. I think Frank did it to please her."
Both Whithams grew up in farm families
in Kansas. Frank's Kansas roots trace back
to the 1860s when his great grandfather,
Quincy Whitham, who fought with an Indi-
ana regiment in the Civil War, picked up the
family and moved to western Kansas to try
his hand at farming.
It was not an easy life.
