Though Mott now has two horses for LNJ, the majority of their racing sta- ble is based in California with trainers such as Hollendorfer, Richard Mandel- la and Keith Desormeaux. Roth is of- ten asked why most of her stable races in the Golden State when she and her parents all live in New York. "Honestly, I think it is such an advan- tage to have Alex at the track every day to see the horses and talk to the trainers," she remarked. "You can't put a price tag on him with his knowl- edge of the horses and the sport. I feel we get such an honest opinion from him about how the horses are doing and if a horse needs time off. Alex and Jason do all the talking to the trainers. They 100-percent manage the whole thing. I like that. I don't need to talk to the trainers and get in their way," the 36-year-old said, in her typical no-non- sense, tell-it-like-it-is fashion. Solis said that he and Litt appreciat- ed the freedom to do what they think is right, and racing's learning curve, which can be steep, has found its match in Roth. "From the time I met her un- til now, she's come a long way," said Solis. "Before she got into the sport, she was enamored with the Derby and the things the outside world sees, and now she knows so much about so many of the little aspects of the sport." Solis said the group had a good laugh over dinner recently recalling an early result at Saratoga. "One of their hors- es finished third in a race, and Tony Dutrow thought the world of her, and he said, `she probably wants grass,' and Jamie said `grass?' She didn't un- derstand there was grass racing. Now, she wants to have horses in Europe because she appreciates the grass so much. Her passion for horses is second to none. Whenever we go to the rac- es, she always wants to go to the track in the morning and to go to the farms to visit horses. It has been a thrill to watch. I couldn't be happier; they're great people to work for." Solis cited her work with Thorough- 17
